Sinkers
The best all-round weight for learning to cast is about 150gm,
which is also the standard weight used by the majority of UK
beach fishermen whether they are big casters or not. Most rods
are designed for maximum performance at about 150gm,
though they can safely handle a great deal more.
Smaller sinkers generally cause more problems than big ones
because they are too light to make the rod work properly unless
the cast is extremely powerful. In a beginner's hands, anything
less than 115gm usually fails to load the rod enough to
generate the essential spring-and-lever sensation that is so
characteristic of good technique.
